New York City's Cooper Union grants full scholarships to every student

If you have someone heading off to college, you know how expensive college has become. Fortunately, there are tools to help you compare the true cost of a particular college or university as well as different  lists of colleges offering the best deal for the money.

Below are four different lists of the top ten value colleges for 2012 prepared by Kiplinger, Princeton Review, Forbes and Bank Rate, respectively. Interestingly, when looking across the four lists, no one college appears on all four, primarily because of the different criteria used by each source and their different weightings for the cost of tuition, financial aid available including innovative financing sources, academic quality and average debt at graduation.

Kiplinger’s Top 10 Value Colleges for 2012

Kiplinger evaluated colleges based on academic ranking, student/faculty ratio, graduation rate, total in- and out-state cost, financial aid packages, and average debt at graduation.

The Princeton Review’s Top Ten Value Colleges for 2011

The Princeton Review evaluated schools based on academics, cost of attendance, and financial aid. Like the Kiplinger list, they also include the top 100 value schools broken down into the top 50 public colleges and the top 50 private colleges. Unlike the other lists, their list is titled for 2011 most likely because it was released at the beginning of 2011. The others were published late 2011.

Forbes’ Top 10 Value Colleges for 2012

Forbes ranked 650 best undergraduate institutions focusing on quality of teaching, career prospects, graduation rates and low levels of debt. Out of the 650, they prepared a list of the top 10 colleges based totally on value; i.e. the cost of each school relative to the quality of education provided.

Predictably, the service academies dominate this “best buy” list, nabbing the top three spots: West Point, the Air Force Academy and the Naval Academy. New York City’s Cooper Union, which grants full scholarships to every student, snagged the number four value slot. The rankings were prepared by the Center for College Affordability and Productivity, a Washington, D.C., think tank.

Say what you will about Happy Meals and, I know, there is plenty to say, we need to encourage McDonald’s to offer this book-giving program in the U.S.

You, dear reader, probably love books and ensure there are many books around for your kids to read and treasure. However, many children in the U.S. have never had the thrill of owning their very own book. In fact, one in three children in the UK does not own a book according to the National Literacy Trust. And while there are no comparable numbers for the U.S., there’s no reason to think that number is any better here.

However, eight out of ten families with young children visit a McDonald’s at least once over the course of the year. So the odds are that, with this program, many children who have never owned a book will end up with at least one book they can call their own.

There’s nothing like a child owning his or her very own book, pulling it out at will, thumbing through it leisurely, reading it and then re-reading it. And with most books, after you finish one, you seek out the next. Books open new worlds to all who pay attention. Turning on a child to reading can make an immeasurable difference in that person’s life. Research shows a very clear link between reading and achievement.

This program is a good idea. It sends a powerful message that reading is for everyone.

Before developing the app, WebMD asked new moms and dads what they needed. They found parents feel the time between well-baby visits with their doctor is too long. Many parents are online almost daily looking for answers to their questions or trying to better understand the key milestones in their baby’s first and second years. Parents want a pediatrician in their pocket to get information immediately and conveniently.

“Babies change rapidly in their first two years of life, challenging new parents to keep up with their baby’s nutrition, health, sleep and development – all of which are essential for a happy and healthy baby and parent,” said Dr. Hansa Bhargava, a pediatrician and WebMD medical editor, pediatrics.

The WebMD Baby app gives new parents access to 400 articles, 598 tips, 70 videos and 5 parent tools. It also sends parents,  on a regular basis, information tailored to their baby’s age. For babies 0-1, a new health and wellness tip is sent to their app every day, as well as more in-depth content every week. For babies and toddlers, ages 1-2, information relevant to that age is sent to their parents’ app monthly.

Other features include:

• Baby record keeper  to help track growth, diapers, sleep and feedings
• A Baby Book to upload photos, events and milestones
• Searchable categories on baby and toddler care, including feeding and nutrition, growth and development, vaccines, illness and emergencies, information just for moms, information just for dads, parenting tips and information by age
• Eight video Q&A sessions with pediatricians

When first downloading the app, new parents can watch an instructional video that outlines all of the app’s features. They then register themselves and their baby, including the baby’s birth date and gender, after which they begin receiving customized articles, videos and tips.

Bob Tedeschi at the New York Times says the WebMd Baby App is arguably more practical and useful than many of the other baby apps combined, including the popular Baby Connect which sells for $4.99.

WebMD is not perfect, however. Some fixes are needed. For example, if mom enters information into WebMD Baby from an iPhone and then dad logs onto the app from an iPodTouch, it won’t show him the information mom entered in the iPhone. Videos cannot currently be seen in landscape, and the app doesn’t allow typing in portrait mode.

But most moms and dads love it; it has 4 out of 5 rating. “Clearly great thought went into this app. It has the features that you would want in a baby app and is simple and intuitive to use. This is awesome,” wrote one mother.  ”It’s the best baby app out there by far,” wrote another.

Sweet Pea, an Australian shepherd/border collie, holds several records: most steps walked down by a dog facing forward while balancing a 5-ounce glass of water (10 steps) and fastest 100 meters walked by a dog with a can balanced on its head (2 minutes and 55 seconds).

Oldest Dog

Bluey, an Australian cattle dog, holds the world record for oldest dog at 29 years and 5 months of age. Les Hall of Victoria, Australia, got Bluey as a puppy in 1910, and the dog worked with cattle and sheep for nearly 20 years before being put to sleep on Nov. 14, 1939.

If it a solid, it must be crumbled, chewed or smeared.

If the volume is low, it must go high.

If it is a drawer, it must be pulled upon.
If it is a toothbrush, it must be inserted into my mouth.
If it has a faucet, it must be turned on at full force.
If it is a phone, I must talk to it.

If it is a bug, it must be swallowed.
If it doesn’t stay on my spoon, it must be dropped on the floor.
If it is not food, it must be tasted.
If it IS food, it must not be tasted.

If it is dry, it must be made wet with drool, milk, or toilet water.
If it is a carseat, it must be protested with arched back.
If it is Mommy, it must be hugged.
