Mall Maps For Your Phone
Posted on 27. Oct, 2010 by Patricia in Tech for Moms
Ever been in a large mall or airport and needed to quickly find a restroom or the nearest Starbucks or McDonald’s? If you have a smartphone, there’s now an App that gives you directions from your current position.
PointInside works on an Iphone, Ipad and many Android phones as does Micello. FastMall only works on Apple products. All Apps are free and include store locations phone numbers, hours of operation, and occasionally alerts about sales.
Typical is FastMall which includes a mall floor plan including location of escalators, exits, restrooms and elevators. There’s a search function to look for stores by name or type; for example, restaurants.
In some cases, for example, the Micello App, maps show details beyond the basic four walls. A map of the Ikea store in East Palo Alto, California features an aisle winding through the store and the locations of different departments such as “children’s” and “closet systems.”
The Apps, for now, only include malls and airports. Developers are working on adding casinos, stadiums, universities , hospitals and outdoor destinations like theme parks, zoos and urban shopping districts. Aisle411, a mobile service set to start next month, is hoping to take the detail even further by allowing users to find individual products inside stores.

Religious Convictions and Worried about Searching Safely? Check Out These Search Engines
Posted on 25. Oct, 2010 by Patricia in Tech for Moms
If you have strong religious views, you may be interested in using something other than Google or Bing when searching.
For Christian bible adherents, there is SeekFind, a Colorado Springs-based Christian search engine that returns only results from websites consistent with the Bible. According to a recent interview on National Public Radio, Shea Houdman, who runs SeekFind, the site is designed “to promote what we believe to be biblical truth” and excludes sites that don’t meet that standard.
Houdmann says a search on his site would not turn up pornography. If you search “gay marriage,” you would get results that argue against gay marriage. And if you type in “Democratic Party,” your first search result is a site on Marxism.
Besides this Christian search engine, there is Jewogle for Jews and

What the $#@ Is Going on with My iPhone?
Posted on 09. Aug, 2010 by Patricia in Tech for Moms
Do you have a 3G iPhone, i.e. the 2008 model? If you do, DON’T UPDATE YOUR 3G iPHONE TO iOS4 the next time you synch! In other words, when you synch and the little message pops up asking if you want to upgrade to the latest version, ignore it. Unfortunately, I chose to upgrade… and it slowed down my iPhone down significantly. Very, very frustrating.
According to a recent article in The Wall Street Journal, this update also drains the battery more quickly and, for some, the phone gets hot. There’s a lot of frustration out there by 3G users; there are more than 600 comments to the Wall Street Journal article – virtually all complaining about performance on their iPhone after updating. The new iPhone software isn’t directly compatible with the earlier 3G version and that is causing the problem.
There are some fixes
